To finish: Transfer all stitches onto a thread, letting the stitches in the 7 yarn over holes in the fan shapes drop, but catching the threads that appear.
( I did this by doing one round of just moving the stitches from the left to the right hand needle without knitting them, looping the threads from the dropped YO's over the needle.)

After doing this, proceed to crochet off the stitches:

1 double/single crochet in every stitch, except at the bottom of the curve between the fan shapes: 3 stitches together with 1 dc/sc. In the small holes do 5 dc/sc while at the same time enclosing the threads from the dropped knitting stitches in the dc/sc. Do the same in the larger hole at the top of the fan shape, exept here you do 7 dc/sc.Knitted lace doily

Turn work so the wrong side faces you and knit 3 rounds - then cast off. Finish by crocheting loops around the edge.

Translators note: If you prefer the last 3 rounds could be worked from the right side - just purl instead of knit. The crochet loops could also be worked immediately after the last 3 rows withut casting off first.Doily with solid star motif on lacy background

*2 stitches tog with a double/single crochet, chain 7*, repeat till end, ending with a slip stitch in the first dc/sc.

Translators note: personally I think 3 sts tog looks better and this is what I used in the sample.

Cast off all stitches.

The Crocheted Edge:

Original instructions for the crocheted edge are not very clear, but the following is my suggestion after looking at the pictures.

Where crochet terminology differ, UK/US.

1st row: Inserting your hook in a cast-off stitch right over a point in the star * 1 treble/double crochet, 2 chain, 1 treble/ double crochet in same stitch, [skip next stitch, 2 chain, 1 treble/ double crochet in next stich]x13, skip next stitch, 2 ch.
Repeat from * all around, ending with a slip stitch in the 1st stitch in round.

2nd row: * [ (1 treble/double crochet, 1 single/double crochet in top of stitch just worked)x3, 1 treble/double crochet] - all in the same space . Skip 1 space. 1 single/double crochet in next space, 2 ch, go to next space.*
Repeat from * to * all around.Heirloom doily

LIZ SNELLA'S HEIRLOOM DOILY

This pattern is a reconstruction I made from a picture I found on the internet at http://com1.med.usf.edu/~esnella/doily.htm

I have varied slightly from the original decreases used, and added an extra round (round 34).
